Blue Flag Beaches Crete 2011 :: Accessibility Emphasized

In 2011, some 387 Greek beaches and 9 Marinas have been awarded the Blue Flag Award for excellence. Of these the Island of Crete has the lion's share of 98 beaches (96 in 2010) plus its only yacht marina at Aghios Nikolaos.

Emphasis by the Greek national NGO in charge of the Blue Flag Project in Greece, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN) this year has put accessibility for visitors with restricted mobility as a priority.

The Blue Flag Award, an internationally acclaimed benchmark for the world's best beaches is a voluntary eco-labelling system organised by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) an established NGO based in Copenhagen. FEE covers 41 countries around the world .
